"... a darkly romantic beginning to what promises to be an unusual contemporary YA fantasy series.
- Serena Chase, USA Today

When Cora’s mother whisks the family away for the summer, Cora must decide between forging her future in the glimmering world of second homes where her parents belong, or getting lost in the bewitching world of the locals and the mystery surrounding a lonely old woman who claims to be a selkie creature—and who probably needs Cora more than anyone else.

Through the fantastical tales and anguished stories of the batty Mrs. O’Leary, as well as the company of a particularly gorgeous local boy called Ronan, Cora finds an escape from the reality of planning her life after high school. But will it come at the cost of alienating Cora’s mother, who struggles with her own tragic memories?

As the summer wanes, it becomes apparent that Ronan just may hold the answer to Mrs. O’Leary’s tragic past—and Cora’s future.

“Has Mrs. O’Leary already gone inside?” he said.

I nodded.

“She had a rough day today,” he said. “She asked me to get her jacket three times.”
I nodded, debating whether it was okay to start a conversation with him given our past. I wanted to explain that embarrassing night on the pier, or as he called it, the jetty, but I couldn’t. So if he stayed away from that topic, then I could be civil.

“What’s that about?” I asked. “She does that to me a lot.”

He looked at me with squinted eyes, as if assessing whether or not I was trustworthy. But he finally looked resigned and said, “I don’t really know. She’s had a rough time since Mr. O’Leary died.”

I nodded sympathetically, as if I could possibly know how that felt.
“He did everything around the house,” Ronan went on. “And when he died, she would say she didn’t know where anything was anymore. That’s why my parents set me up to help her go through the house, clear things out. She talks about this jacket that she says her husband must have left somewhere, some days she says he hid it. But I’ve been through that house several times over, and no matter what I find, it’s never the right one.” He paused. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but she’s never completely here anymore.”

  1. This sounded so good that I had to race to Amazon right away to get it, luckily it was still free for Kindle, and is now safely tucked away in my cyber-shelves. The book description was captivating enough with talk of fantastical stories told by selkies, but that excerpt sealed the deal with a tug of the heartstrings for poor Mrs. O'Leary.

    1. I picked up a copy as well. I hope you enjoy it!
