Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire

Pub. Date: May 2015

ISBN: 9781492619031

Format: Trade paper/$9.99

About the Book:

Will it be a summer of fresh starts or second chances?

For Lucy, the Jersey Shore isn’t just the perfect summer escape, it’s home. As a local girl, she knows not to get attached to the tourists. They breeze in during Memorial Day weekend, crowding her costal town and stealing moonlit kisses, only to pack up their beach umbrellas and empty promises on Labor Day. Still, she can’t help but crush on charming Connor Malloy. His family spends every summer next door, and she longs for their friendship to turn into something deeper.

Then Superstorm Sandy sweeps up the coast, bringing Lucy and Connor together for a few intense hours. Except nothing is the same in the wake of the storm, and Lucy is left to pick up the pieces of her broken heart and her broken home. Time may heal all wounds, but with Memorial Day approaching and Connor returning, Lucy’s summer is sure to be filled with fireworks.

Excerpt:

Connor opened the gorgeous double doors, each with half-moon stained-glass windows on the top, and motioned me inside. “After you.”

The house had that distinct yet hard-to-describe smell of a beach home that had been closed up for a while. I walked to the center of the high-ceilinged foyer and immediately pictured pine garland and twinkling white lights wrapped around the sweeping banister.

“Wow. I’d love to spend Christmas here,” I said and immediately regretted being so sappy.

Connor smiled. “You could fit a twelve-foot tree in this hallway.”

I admit, over the years I’ve had my share of Connor-centric fantasies. However the image of him watching his children pad down the stairs on Christmas morning had never been one of them…until that very second. I liked thinking about Connor that way.

“Come on. You’ve got to see the master bedroom.”

The wholesome image of a Malloy family Christmas vanished. Aha, I thought. That was the Connor I knew.

“Uh-uh,” I said. “The widow’s walk. I want to go there first.”

“Race you,” he said and took off running.

He beat me up the two flights and was waiting for me in the third-floor hallway toward the back of the house. Off the hallway was an art studio, with a drafting table and a bookcase. There was also a telescope standing near the window.

“Follow me.” He crossed the studio and unlocked the deadbolt to the narrow door leading outside.

“You’ve already been up there?”

“First thing I did when I got here,” Connor said.

“Not the master bedroom?”

“Nah, that’s the first thing I wanted to do when you got here.”

I thought it was just more flirty banter, but Connor’s flushed cheeks looked as warm as my body felt. He stared at me for a beat too long and my throat constricted. I was suddenly aware that I’d left the house with slept-on hair and no mascara. The look on Connor’s face told me he hadn’t noticed. His eyes never left mine.

Finally he said, “Come on, Luce. I’ll follow you.” The space was tight when I passed in front of him, and the closeness of his body gave me the shivers. I opened the door and stepped outside onto a small patio. I walked toward the wrought-iron spiral staircase that lead to the widow’s walk on the roof and placed my hand on the railing. My knees felt shaky as I began the climb, but I never looked back.

Zoe has a great pair of legs, perky boobs, and wears exactly what she needs to show it all off. She works hard for the easy sleazy ‘you only wish you were me’ reputation, burying who she really is—an all-out nerd.

The only time Zoe gets to be herself is when she hides under her comforter to read X-Men comics, sending jealousy stabs at everyone who attends Comic-Con. Keeping up her popular rep is too important, and she’s so damn insecure to care about the consequences. But when Zoe’s sister takes her car for a ‘crash and burn into a tree’ joyride, her parents get her a replacement. A manual. Something she doesn’t know how to operate, but her next door neighbor Zak sure as heck does.

Zak’s a geek to the core, shunned by everyone in school for playing Dungeons and Dragons at lunch and wearing “Use the Force” t-shirts. And Zoe’s got it bad for the boy. Only Zak doesn’t want Popular Zoe. He wants Geek Zoe.

She has to shove her insecurities and the fear of dropping a few rungs on the social ladder aside to prove to Zak who she really is and who she wants to be… if she can figure it out herself.

Sierra racks her brain for ways to impress the sexy drummer, but the short skirts and bursting cleavage don’t seem to cut it.

When Sierra gets paired with Levi’s sister, Brea, for a mentorship program, they strike a deal. In exchange for Sierra keeping her mouth shut about Brea ditching the program, Brea lets Sierra dig for more info on Levi to help get the guy of her dreams.

But when Sierra discovers Levi no longer plays the drums, his family has moved into a trailer, and he’s traded in his Range Rover for a baby blue moped, Sierra’s not sure if she can go through with violating his privacy. Stuck with the ghosts of a generations-old feud and hunted by forces she cannot see, Barrie must find a way to break free of the family legacy. With the help of sun-kissed Eight Beaufort, who knows what Barrie wants before she knows herself, the last Watson heir starts to unravel her family's twisted secrets. Review: Snow White Lies by Sarah J. Pepper!

Title: Snow White Lies
Author: Sarah J. Pepper
Format: egalley
Pub. Date: April 26th 2015
Source: Sarah J. Pepper

Book Description via Goodreads:

“Evil poisons everyone. Period. Our mouths water when we sink our teeth into what we have always craved. Surrendering to our desires by biting off delectable piece of the forbidden fruit is nothing more than a meager confession: Poison tastes sinfully sweet,”—Confessions of the Big Apple Debutante, by blogger Miss Snow White.

Review:

★★★★

Before I even talk about the book, can we just take a moment to admire the cover? It's gorgeous, and is possibly my favorite cover so far this year. Stunning.

I wasn't too sure what to expect when I started this book, I've never read anything by Sarah J. Pepper before. That said, this definitely wasn't what I expected. I don't mean that in a bad way, of course, but I've read a lot of retellings before so I went in with assumptions of how this would go, and I was definitely wrong.

Snow White Lies is not your mother's Snow White. It's a contemporary, new adult, urban fantasy-esque book that turns the familiar tale we all know on its head. There's familiar characters, such as Snow herself and the dwarves, but they're twisted into a whole new story. In this book, Snow is a blogger and good lord she is sassy. I loved it. She's a strong character and I liked watching her story unfold. I was never really quite sure what directions this book was going to take, which made it engaging and hard to put down. This is a darker retelling that has gritty/dark themes throughout the book, which helped to hold my attention.

I'd definitely read more of Pepper's work based off of my experience with Snow White Lies. I think grown up fans of fairy tales will eat this one up, and another chunk of readers will pick it up for the cover art alone. Fans of urban fantasy, as well as darker stories, I think would also enjoy reading this one.

I was provided a copy in exchange for my honest review.

break sitting around on the beach, she takes the epic vacation of a lifetime.

Tornado chasing.

Nebraska, Allie meets her dream of seeing a tornado. In person. She can’t wait
to tell her friends back home. Never mind that her parents are going to kill
her.

shocked. Confused. When she returns home to Wisconsin, something’s…different.
Allie now bears a curse so awful, it could destroy everyone and everything
she’s ever known.

With her best friend, Tommy, Allie must return to the plains to find a way to
reverse it. She enters a world that she had never imagined, where she becomes a
pawn in a fight to save the people of Evansburg from her fate…or to destroy
them.

Excerpt:

Chapter One

My very first tornado shreds the grass of the plains.

I stand next to the van, mouth dropping open, heart pounding. It's the moment I've been waiting for. I’ve saved the money for years and begged my uncle to book us for the Wild Weather Storm Chasing Tours.

Uncle Cassius gasps next to me, equally in awe. It barely cuts over the wind rushing towards the distant funnel. Waves of grass bow down to the twister, whipped down by the surrounding air flying in to feed it. The perfect white cone stands out against the coal sky, slim and graceful. A skirt of dust spins around its base, signaling its dance through a field a few miles away. The wind snaps against my jeans, pulling at my new Wild Weather Tours T-shirt.

"Beautiful!" Kyle, our storm chaser guide, snaps a photo for his website. He steals a glance at me and smiles. The wind ruffles his ash-blond hair. Wrinkles form around his eyes. He's all enthusiasm, joy that we've found our prey. "Don't worry. We're safe. It's heading to the east. It'll pass no closer than a couple of miles to our north."

I want his job someday.

"I'm not scared," I said, but my shaky voice betrays me. Who am I kidding? Kyle's an experienced chaser--twenty years--but this is a real tornado. In person. Live. I never realized it would be this intense, this breathtaking. A hollow feeling fills my stomach like I'm plunging down the first hill of a roller coaster. It is scary...but fun.

My parents would murder me and Uncle Cassius both for sneaking away on this trip. If they find out we’re not really in Disney World being bored to death by Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, well, it’ll be way scarier than this storm.

The tornado curves, almost like it's leaning to the side for a better look at something. At us? It's a weird thought, one that makes me laugh. The thunderstorm spins slowly above it, low and menacing. Thunder claps. It's enough to remind me that the storm in front of me isn't just beautiful. It's a predator, entrancing like a cobra and ready to strike.

Good thing there's no houses or buildings in its way. Only farmland stretches from horizon to horizon.

"Allie. Forget your camera?" Uncle Cassius points to my pocket and smiles. It’s a tense smile. So I'm not the only one with some nerves going.

Camera.

Yes. Duh.

I pull it out of my pocket and fumble with the slim case, fingers hunting for the button. The camera zings to life. Behind it, the tornado looms a bit larger, gaining strength and racing across the ground. More dust kicks up around the perfect white of the twister.

Source: Running Press

Description:

Publishers Weekly’s Top 10 Cookbooks for Spring 2015

Pomegranates and pistachios. Floral waters and cinnamon. Bulgur wheat, lentils, and succulent lamb. These lush flavors of Maureen Abood's childhood, growing up as a Lebanese-American in Michigan, inspired Maureen to launch her award-winning blog, Rose Water & Orange Blossoms. Here she revisits the recipes she was reared on, exploring her heritage through its most-beloved foods and chronicling her riffs on traditional cuisine. Her colorful culinary guides, from grandparents to parents, cousins, and aunts, come alive in her stories like the heady aromas of the dishes passed from their hands to hers.

Taking an ingredient-focused approach that makes the most of every season’s bounty, Maureen presents more than 100 irresistible recipes that will delight readers with their evocative flavors: Spiced Lamb Kofta Burgers, Avocado Tabbouleh in Little Gems, and Pomegranate Rose Sorbet. Weaved throughout are the stories of Maureen’s Lebanese-American upbringing, the path that led her to culinary school and to launch her blog, and life in Harbor Springs, her lakeside Michigan town.

★★★★

Review:

I'm always looking to add new cultures to my culinary repertoire. I don't know much about Lebanese cooking, so I was excited when I found Rose Water and Orange Blossoms. I think this is a great book for a bit more experienced home cook who is interested in adding some more flavor to their meals.

This book is sorted by course, which makes it easy to pick what you want to make. There's even chapters on things such as preserving and drinks. I love tea, so this made me happy. There's a really nice guide at the beginning that introduces the "new" ingredients and includes sources for where you can get a hold of them. I really liked this addition, because I've been irritated with cookbooks in the past when they just expect you to have a million new ingredients.

The cookbook is written in a more conversational style, which makes it seem that the author is talking you through each recipe, which is nice. The recipes' steps are in longer paragraphs, which makes it appear a bit more complex. There's lots of family stories within the book, and it is clear that this book is filled with love and passion for her cooking, heritage, and family. Nice tips are sprinkled throughout the book, like how to work with grape leaves and how to seed a pomegranate (something I definitely need instructions for- I'm awful at it). If a dish's name isn't in English, then it is translated directly underneath so you know exactly what you're preparing, and I like that. I wish there were more photographs included, but the ones that are included are lovely and vibrant.

The author had an upbringing in Michigan, and I practically lived there growing up, because we used to spend weeks and weekends up there all year long. I loved that I could see the Michigan influence in this Lebanese-American style cookbook. Whenever I saw a recipe showcasing ingredients such as whitefish or cherries, I got really happy. I love this appreciation and reflection.

In my personal opinion, the dessert chapter is the best part of the book, and is likely the recipes that I'll make the most in my own kitchen. There are helpful menus provided in this book to help you plan for special meals or events, which is a pretty cool touch.

There are a lot dishes in this book that I can't wait to try, but the ones I want to try the most include Stone Fruit with Flower Waters and Shaved Coconut, Roasted Leg of Lamb with Black Cherry Pomegranate Salsa, Pistachio Crusted Whitefish with Parsley Lemon Butter, and Sticky Date Cake with Warm Orange Blossom Caramel Sauce.

Overall, this book is a really approachable way to learn about Lebanese cooking. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for beginners, but I don't think it's overly complex. I'd also recommend it to those who love Michigan-centric ingredients, like myself.

I was provided a copy in exchange for my honest review.

Blog Tour Spotlight & Giveaway: The Yellow Hoods Series by Adam Dreece!

The Yellow Hoods Series:
As the Yellow Hoods series starts, we see a pastoral world on the brink of a great change. Steam-based and other technologies are emerging, hence the genre “Emergent Steam Punk”. But this is written in the tradition of hard science fiction– you will find no gratuitous gears here. In the series, Adam Dreece masterfully weaves together familiar elements from fairy tales with realistic characters, bringing them to life. Here we meet the Nikolas Klaus: a kind of fusion of Santa Claus and Nikola Tesla and his granddaughter, young Tee who evokes Little Red Riding Hood but with the force of personality of a Katniss (Hunger Games) or Buffy (aka the Vampire Slayer). You may laugh and you may cry, but I guarantee you will enjoy the ride.

Series: The Yellow Hoods

Author: Adam Dreece

Publication Date: April 14, 2014

Someone is on the hunt for the steam engine plans, and believes that master inventor, Nikolas Klaus, has them. Thought dead by most, and forgotten by many, the quiet grandfather has been living for years in the sleepy mountain town of Minette, keeping his inventions mostly to himself and watching his granddaughter grow up.

Twelve-year-old Tee, and her two best friends, Elly and Richy, come together as the heroic Yellow Hoods in the face of life threatening danger. Whose side are the Cochon brothers on, and will they tip the balance? Will Nikolas’ ties to one of the secret societies cost him Tee’s life?

Series: The Yellow Hoods

Author: Adam Dreece

Publication Date: August 18, 2014

In an act of desperation, inventor Maxwell Watt sends his teenage son to Nikolas Klaus with the secret plans for his steam engine. The Fare, a nefarious secret society, learns of the game-changing invention and accelerate their timeline to neutralize Klaus and reclaim control over the kingdoms.

While wars spark to the south, children in Mineau have started to go missing–again.

Captain Archambault suspects the return of the Ginger Lady. With the help of the Yellow Hoods and their friends, the search is on to find the missing children before it is too late.

What is the secret that ties the Yellow Hoods to the Ginger Lady? Who are the Red Hoods really?

Title: All the King’s Men (Bk 3)

Series: The Yellow Hoods

Author: Adam Dreece

Publication Date: To be Released on April 15th!!

More than a hundred years ago, a king declared that all geniuses, scientists and inventors were abominations, save for those willing to become his Conventioneers. His edict spread like wildfire through the kingdoms, and drove the hunted into the arms of the secret societies, the Tub and the Fare.

Decades later, having taken control of the remains of the crushed Fare, a young Marcus Pieman follows up on rumors of a homeless, teenage Abominator in his city. When the scared Nikolas Klaus looked up at Marcus for the first time, a tremendous bond was forged.

A betrayal leads Tee to a showdown with her greatest foe. Who breaks and who lays bleeding in the middle of nowhere?

And Mounira learns the truth about the once great inventor, Christophe Creangle.

Author Bio:

Adam Dreece burst onto the young adult fiction scene in 2014. His debut novel, Along Came a Wolf, hit the shelves in April, launching what is now the bestselling series The Yellow Hoods. Book Two, Breadcrumb Trail, quickly followed in September, locking in Dreece's status as a force to be reckoned with. Now Book Three, All the King’s-Men, is about to be released and is expected to take its place on the Amazon and Calgary Herald Best Seller Lists, alongside its predecessors.

For twenty-five years Adam had written stories and set them aside, including a memoir covering his battle with terrible scar pain and then being hit with severe asthma. He’d always given the priority and focus to his technical career. In January 2015, he became a full time author.

Adam’s a devoted husband and father of three great kids. Though driven, he ensures there is always time for his family, fans, and fellow authors.

With his tween daughter as his muse and the first to hear the rough drafts, it’s no surprise that he’s a huge proponent of strong female characters, something very clear in The Yellow Hoods.
